It’s a New Year and I’m back with another ZoD Challenge!
For the month of March I would like you to do a good deed a day for 31 days.
A deed is an action that is performed intentionally or consciously.
When we do something for others without the need for return, not only does it make them feel good it makes us (the person doing the act) feel good too.
This is called altruism or altruistic behaviour whereby we do something out of complete selflessness, without conditions and our only concern is about the well-being of another person.
It seems like a lot of you already display this altruistic behaviour anyway, as 96.3% of you said that you are the type of person who gives without expecting anything in return and 85% of you said that you often do something for someone just because.
If we really get into it, one could argue that human behaviour is driven/motivated from a place of selfishness regardless of it how appears on the surface.
I know, it may seem like a negative way to look at it, but I believe if you are genuine, the intentions are pure and it has a positive impact on the person receiving whatever the act may be, e.g. a compliment, a gift or a even a simple gesture such as a smile, which makes them feel good, then surely this isn’t a negative thing at all.
We could all do with adding a little bit of positivity to someone’s life, be it a family member, a friend, someone you are just cool with or even a complete stranger.
Ask yourself what have you got to lose by showing some kindness?
I really can’t find any cons about this.
However, there is just one thing I want you be aware of, and that is, your deed of the day may not be received the way you imagined it to be. I say this because, all of us are different and we can only control our actions and not the actions of others.
And this is exactly why I say expectations lead to disappointment, especially when you’re not the one in control.
So to avoid disappointment, don’t expect nothing at all.
If said person shows appreciation then great and if they don’t, well that’s fine too.
This challenge is all about trying to do a good deed for doing a good deeds sake.
Daily Deeds is a ZoD challenge because it’s so easy for us to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our own lives that sometimes we forget to express our gratitude to others. And this is to anyone who brings value to our lives which could be directly (family, friends, significant others) or non – directly (charities/organisations, people who you follow on socials). I just think it would be nice if we could make it more apparent this month, it may feel a little awkward messaging someone out of the blue but that’s what these challenges are all about; living life outside of your comfort zone.

The gesture doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, this is about paying attention to what someone is likely to appreciate no matter how big or small it may be.
To help you think of ideas, you can ask yourself this question:
How can I put a smile on x’s face?
Examples could be:
- Get in contact with someone you haven’t for ages
- Donate to a small charity
- Support a local business
- Congratulate a person on their achievements
- Acknowledge someone’s efforts
- Saying thank you for what x does (try and be specific)
- Randomly buy x their favourite thing
- Smile at a stranger
The list could go on and on.
